On the 23rd March of 1944 the Italian communists, the GAP, committed a bomb-attack on a company of German policemen, all from South-Tyrol, as to provoke retaliation by the Germans. Initially 33 German policemen died -- later the death-toll mounted to 42 dead Germans and 10 dead Italians, of which one boy aged 11 -- so Hitler via Kesselring gave to the superior of Erich Priebke, to lieutenant-colonel Herbert Kappler, commander of the security police and the secret service in Rome, the order that for every dead German caused by this bomb-attack 10 Italians had to be shot in retaliation as was permitted by international law at war.
